Rules
We impose a few rules. They are to ensure that:
- the camp is maintained in a good condition for future campers
- multiple groups can use the camp at the same time
- we maintain good relationships with our neighbours
- Vehicles are not allowed on the camping area at any time except with the express prior permission of the Booking Secretary or Camp Warden.
- Caravans are not allowed on the camp (condition of our lease). If there is a real need for them, they may be allowed on the car park area but only with the prior permission of the Booking Secretary or Camp Warden.
- No dogs (except assistance dogs) or any other pets are allowed on the camp under any circumstances – Please make sure that your visitors are aware of this.
- Fires are not allowed in the woods, they are only permitted on the bases provided. No turves may be dug. No ashes (hot or cold) or any rubbish is to be left in the woods. Cooking fires must be kept small and extra care taken during dry weather. Please leave the camp clean; tidy and return any surplus wood to the wood pit. If altar fires are used they must be over the fire area and not over grass.
- Wet pits must not be dug. Use buckets with holes in to strain dirty water.
- Please take all your unburned refuse, tins and bottles away with you. Glass and tin foil do not burn and should not be put into fires. If they have been put on a fire please remove them with your rubbish as they do not rot down either. The refuse collector does not collect from the camp – TAKE ALL YOUR RUBBISH HOME PLEASE.
- Trees used for pioneering must be adequately protected with hessian or other suitable material.
- No trees or branches may be cut or sawn either on the camp or in the woods. No saws or axes are allowed in the woods at any time. Firewood may be picked up from the ground or taken from the wood pit.
- Bivouacs must not be constructed of natural materials. Those made of other materials must be removed before the end of the camp. Tents are not allowed in the woods.
- Please keep out of all fenced off areas.
- Do not trespass on the neighbouring fields. They are private property.
- The Woodpit & Camp Fire Circles are NOT play areas. The Wood Pit has wood which might have nails in it. The Camp Fire Circles are for organised campfires; Scouts Own or instructional sessions.
- Please keep the camp quiet from 22:30 – 07:30 hours, and keep noise within reasonable levels at all times.
- Radios; tape recorders or musical instruments must not be played to the annoyance of neighbouring residents. Televisions are not allowed on the camp.
- Under no circumstances are any fireworks to be brought onto camp.
- 1Woodlands District Scout Council and The National Trust or their agents or employees do not accept responsibility for any injury; damage or loss to any person or property whilst visiting Dorneywood Scout Camp
- The Traverse Wall needs to be supervised by your own leaders, as there is not a resident warden on camp. The Wall is located in a locked area, and requires booking so the warden can unlock the gate.
- Please note headline Risk Assessment which Leaders should take into account when preparing theirs.
- The users are to keep the entrance gates closed as much as possible to discourage unwanted visitors.
- The toilets are for use by all. Please keep them clean.
- Hiring the Camp Fire means accepting the responsibility for leaving the whole area tidy as it should be, for the next user. This means removing any glass or metal (including cans & tinfoil), leaving the fire area tidy and returning unused wood to the wood pit.
Additional notes for Organisations using Dorneywood Scout Camp who are not part of the Scout or Guide Organisations
Scouting is a Charity run by volunteers to train youngsters in all aspects of life. Dorneywood is a Scout Camp also run and maintained by volunteers.
The Camp is primarily a facility to help with Scout and Guide training and the use by other organisations is at the discretion of the Camp Executive Committee.
These comments should be read carefully by people booking the camp, who should also ensure that Adults who are supervising youngsters on site have read them. We expect other organisations to comply with our listed rules as well as taking note of the following which are inherent in Scout training.
Failure to comply with these requirements could result in individual groups not being allowed to use the camp in the future or the camp being restricted to only Scouts and Guides
Respect should be shown to all our property and it should not be damaged or mis-used. If property is damaged, then the Booking Secretary should be notified as soon as possible.
Youngsters should not only be supervised when they are involved in expedition training, but their activities should also be supervised at other times.
Bad language should not be used. This is even more important when young members of the Scout or Guide organisations are on camp.
The toilet block has 3 sections. One for male use, one for female use and one for people with special needs. This is deliberate as we expect adults to use the same facilities as youngsters. This is so that leaders are aware of the state of the facilities. There are spare toilet rolls, cleaning materials and a hose in the Special Needs toilet if required which can be used. The toilet block does not have a frequent paid cleaner. The number of wash basins is only really suitable for washing hands after toilet use.
Washing up should not be carried up in the wash basins in the toilet block nor under the taps around the camp. Neither of these are connected to main drainage and the taps only have small soakaways for water. Washing up should be done near your camping area and campers should provide facilities for straining foul water so that food waste is filtered from washing up water and not left on the camp but taken away with other waste.
The space around other camper’s tents is considered to be private and their sites should not be walked through.
The camp is not a place for youngsters to go wild and have big bonfires. Our wood is a resource used for cooking fires and should not be wasted.
THERE IS NO RUBBISH COLLECTION SERVICE FROM THE CAMP.
All rubbish which is generated by a group should be disposed of by the group. It was bought to the camp initially so there must be room to take it home again.
Rubbish should be cleared from the camping area used as well as from the common use areas.
Before departure all lights should be turned off, all external doors closed and finally the outer gate should be closed.
